Annual Letter
December 2007

Dear Friend,

This year the New Hampshire Breast Cancer Coalition (NHBCC) commemorates its Fifteenth Anniversary. Since NHBCC's inception in 1992, approximately 12,750 New Hampshire women learned they have breast cancer, and approximately 3,000 died of the disease. These sobering statistics remind us that the fight to eradicate breast cancer is not over.

Your response to our annual appeal enables the New Hampshire Breast Cancer Coalition to press forward at both the state and federal level in the fight to end breast cancer.

Your generosity supported the following highlights of 2007:

  • NHBCC expanded its Support Services Fund for low-income and uninsured women, a fund to help New Hampshire women and families who are struggling to pay for health care and the expenses of daily living while facing breast cancer. On October 13, 2007, NHBCC's Support Services Fund was featured on New Hampshire Public Radio's "Giving Matters," a joint project of NHPR and the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. The need for NHBCC's financial assistance is growing.

  • NHBCC represented breast cancer advocates in New Hampshire's Comprehensive Cancer Collaboration, a statewide effort to reduce the morbidity and mortality from all forms of cancer. This year the New Hampshire legislature secured $6 million for two years to implement the state's Cancer Plan, including screening for breast and cervical cancer.

  • NHBCC's Action Alert Network played a vital role in securing $138 million to continue the highly successful Department of Defense (DoD) Peer-Reviewed Breast Cancer Research Program in 2008. This is a remarkable victory because it represents an increase of $10.5 million over last year's appropriation.

  • NHBCC provided financial support for five New Hampshire women to attend the National Breast Cancer Coalition's Annual Advocacy Training Conference and Annual Lobby Day on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. Lobby Day is when New Hampshire breast cancer advocates speak directly with our members of Congress on substantive issues of breast cancer research, legislation, and public policy.

  • NHBCC helped Laurie Thiboutot of Nashua, New Hampshire organize the fourth annual "Laurie's Ride," a motorcycle ride fundraiser dedicated to raising funds for NHBCC's Support Services Fund.

  • NHBCC provided information about breast cancer to hundreds of New Hampshire residents at hospital, business and community health fairs.

  • NHBCC's Chair, trained through the National Breast Cancer Coalition's Project LEAD and annual conferences, participated as a consumer reviewer in developing a research grant proposal for breast cancer research to be conducted right here in our state.

As you consider your annual donation, please remember:

  • NHBCC is uniquely positioned to focus strategically on state educational and support service projects that are not covered by other organizations.

  • NHBCC is New Hampshire's primary link to the National Breast Cancer Coalition, the nation's most effective grassroots advocacy organization.

  • NHBCC aims to revise the New Hampshire Breast Cancer Resource Guide and to expand our Support Services Fund in 2008.

  • NHBCC is an all-volunteer organization.

  • NHBCC relies on your support.

The New Hampshire Breast Cancer Coalition appreciates donations in any amount. If you have contributed in the past, please consider increasing your donation to help NHBCC face the challenges of 2008. Thank you for choosing to support NHBCC.

Sincerely,

Nancy A. Ryan, Chair
New Hampshire Breast Cancer Coalition
