Breast Cancer Survey: Awareness Does Not Mean Knowledge
The National Breast Cancer Coalition released this month the results of a survey conducted during August 2007. Respondents included 1,004 women over the age of eighteen. Among the highlights, the survey showed that most respondents considered themselves knowledgeable about breast cancer, but revealed a disturbing lack of knowledge about breast cancer facts and research funding.
-- According to a National Breast Cancer Coalition press release, "a majority of respondents (56%) believe that most breast cancer occurs among women with a family history or a genetic predisposition to the disease. The reality is that over two thirds of women diagnosed have no known risk factor."
-- The survey also showed, "Some 59% of respondents said they had purchased or worn a pink ribbon -- yet only 36% believe that it is a very important activity in the fight against breast cancer."
-- Furthermore, "While women view the federal government as the best choice for funding breast cancer research, only 8% of those questioned are aware of government funded breast cancer research."
Pink ribbons and pink products, popular ways to raise "awareness," are not translating into substantive work to ensure adequate federal funding, quality research, and access to health care for all.

- Since its inception in 1991, the National Breast Cancer Coalition has placed breast cancer squarely at the top of the nation's political agenda.
- National Breast Cancer Coalition advocacy has resulted in an eight-fold increase in research funding since 1992, including creation of the Department of Defense Peer-Reviewed Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP). Two billion dollars has been appropriated to the BCRP since its inception.
- Our elected and appointed public officials need to know we care about ending breast cancer and we vote on those issues.
