NBCC Conference, cont.
The Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act -- Action in the Senate Gallery
At the end of our conference Lobby Day, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada offered The Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act (S.579) for debate on the Senate Floor. |

One Senator -- Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma -- continues to hold up progress on S.579. Hundreds of advocates, including NHBCC Steering Committee members Jane Edmunds, Sue Holmes and myself, watched from the Senate Gallery in dismay as Senator Coburn once again opposed the bill, parting company with seventy of his colleagues.
Having supported NBCC's work on this legislation for years, the New Hampshire Breast Cancer Coalition knows how critical the bill is to exploring the relationship between breast cancer and the environment. The legislation establishes a mechanism for research on breast cancer and the environment through a comprehensive, scientific peer-review process. There have been compromises in the bill's language that are mutually agreeable to advocates and the National Institutes of Health. The bill enjoys strong bi-partisan support.
But, nothing prepared me to listen to Senator Coburn in person single-handedly oppose this legislation, thwarting an opportunity to allow the bill to have objective Senate debate.
NBCC continues to press ahead with the help of many advocates and members of Congress, including co-sponsor and steady supporter Sen. John E. Sununu of New Hampshire, to make passage of this bill a reality. |
